What “live” means

“Live” describes cannabis frozen shortly after harvest, rather than dried and cured first. This approach helps retain aromatic compounds, including terpenes. It describes the starting material; it does not mean every compound remains unchanged.

Live resin and live rosin

Live resin uses a solvent to separate the extract from fresh-frozen plant material, followed by solvent removal.

Live rosin typically starts with ice-water hash made from fresh-frozen cannabis, then uses heat and pressure to press the hash. “Solventless” distinguishes that mechanical process from solvent extraction. Rosin made from dried material is rosin, without the “live” qualifier.

Where distillate differs

Distillation further refines an extract to concentrate selected compounds. Much of the original aroma is removed during refinement; terpenes may be added afterward. The finished product depends on its formulation, so the word “distillate” alone does not describe its flavor or ingredients.
